George Mallory has been accredited with being the first person to reach the summit on Mount Everest however, he was not successful in making the tiresome journey back down. Sir Edmund Hillary will always hold the title as the first man to successfully climb Mount Everest because he had something George Mallory did not, a Sherpa to help guide him back down the mountain.
